Projects: Diabetes Education Classes The Izard-Stone County Hometown Health Network offers Diabetes Education Classes weekly in both Izard and Stone Counties. The classes are open to residents that are diagnosed with diabetes and their family members. There is no charge to attend the classes and all class materials are provided. Sessions for the classes run for 8 weeks, with the next session beginning January 4 in Stone County and January 6 in Izard County. Classes begin at 5:00 each day. Educators show patients how to make healthy changes in their life. They learn about medications, the importance of exercise, nutrition and diabetic meal planning, how to deal with stress, questions that should be asked during a doctor visit and how to make healthy changes in their lifestyle. Educators for the classes include a Registered Dietician, a Registered Nurse, and a Home Economist. The classes are quite informative and patients gain a wealth of information to help them manage their diabetes. For more information or to register to attend classes, contact the Izard-Stone County Hometown Health Network at: 870-346-5551 or 879-291-7208. Delta Network Project The Izard-Stone County Hometown Health Coalition received funding in 2002 from the Arkansas Delta Rural Development Network for local network development and planning. The general purpose of the ADRDN is to strengthen rural Delta counties and community organization’s ability to develop and implement successful projects to address local needs. The ADRDN program is a 3-year grant in which the Izard-Stone County Hometown Health Coalition has received the first year of funding totaling $32,650 for the two county areas. The project will involve the community in defining our local health care system. The Community Initiated Decision Making Project, or CIDM, recognizes the right of Izard and Stone County citizens to participate in the decisions that affect their lives. There are no more important life-changing decisions for people than those involving their health care. The Izard-Stone County Network is conducting community surveys to access
public needs and ideas. The surveys are confidential and voluntary. Once the surveys are completed, the coalition will meet, examine the findings
and develop a plan based on the priorities established by the community. The network will then respond to the community’s needs by using this plan
to improve health care in Izard and Stone Counties. The Delta committee
meets the 1st Tuesday of every month at 10:00 AM. The location rotates
between counties so please call your local Health Unit for meeting location. The Tobacco Committee has received grant funds totaling $85,000 through the Arkansas Department of Health’s Tobacco Prevention and Education Program. These community grant funds are part of the Master Tobacco Settlement. The Stamp Out Smoking (SOS) grant funds a comprehensive tobacco control
program being implemented in Stone and Izard Counties. Contact Linda Moser at 870-346-5551 or lmoser@centurytel.net for specific monthly locations.
